Adventures in Life

Well...the archaeology trip was cool. Spent 10 days walking about dodging rattle snakes and suffering from desert madness...I would do it again in a heart beat!

My 5 days in Washington D.C. was just as adventurous, but not quite as interesting. I was there during the floods which created much havoc in the big Capitol City. Parts of the Metro were shut down, some of the Smithsonians were closed due to internal water, electricity was out...a tree even fell over on the White House estate. Life was amok for the residents and tourists during that week. To top things off, I was at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier watching the changing of the guard, when the Prime Minister of Japan showed up to pay his respects. To make a long story short, Arlington Cementery was on lock down and I was not able to leave for quite some time, almost causing me to miss my flight home. It all worked out, though, and I was able to witness something I will most likely never witness again.

Tomorrow I am leaving for a 10 day session doing survey work outside of Vernal. Archaeology was always a childhood dream of mine...I am now able to dapple in it...with many thanks to Sandy. When I return, I will have 1 day to repack and fly off to Washington D.C. for another 5 days to attend a Conference at Gallaudet University. This may be the 1st well-traveled summer I have had in 11 years...considering I drove to Spokane and back alone over Easter.

Oh What a Night!

I'm done with the work week 'til Sunday...I even accumulated a few OT hours. Last night was the Prom for the Deaf and Blind kids I work with. I spent 2 days setting up for the event (inbetween several meetings and interviews) and it only took a 1/2 hour to tear it down...the kids had a blast...as did the adults.

The theme was "Under the Sea"...

We had a live band....and they ROCKED! Seriously...

There was alot of dancing.....

....and refreshments....

We crowned a Queen (Deaf) and a King (Blind)...I didn't post their pics due to confidentiality purposes...

The TOE is healing up nicely. I even have some extra pain meds left over for rainy days!! Oh, and I finally got my insurance ordeal straightened out. Have a beautiful weekend!

Okay. So when I went to the doctor to get my foot xrayed and examined, I handed them my insurance card. No problem. I paid my $20 co-pay for their services. My doctor gave me a prescription for pain. When I went to the pharmacy, their first reaction was, "we have to call the clinic because they wrote the wrong date down". Honest mistake. Apparently it was a problem that day because there were other pharmacies on hold for the same problem. OK. Problem resolved. I go to pay for my prescription. After handing them my card, they come back and tell me my card is expired. Hmmmmm.....it worked at the clinic and I have been paying for insurance out of every paycheck. Well....I paid full price for the drugs. I contacted my insurance company today and explained what had happened. Their reply was, "your policy expired in 8/05". Why the fuck am I still paying for it then???? They said to go to my HR and have it resolved. All I can say is they are damn lucky my injuries were not more serious. So I guess I will be going into their office today before I go to work to straighten all this out. Stupid morons.

I know I said I would post pics from my trip, but the batteries are dead in my camera...so here's a short recap of my weekend in Spokane:

Went to a Drag Show
Went and got my friend's girlfriend's nipples pierced (aye chihuahua....no thanks! That hadda hurt!)
Went bowling
Went to a casino
Drank lotsa high point beer

The drive was 11 hours one way. 721 miles to be exact. It was the first solo trip for me in a long time. I enjoyed it...driving through Montana and Northern Idaho. I came through some pretty crazy weather on the trek back. Well...it's back to work for me. I hope all had a Happy Easter!

This morning I am sucking down java, preparing myself to do laundry...packing and going to work. Tomorrow morning I am heading to Spokane for a week. I haven't traveled alone in almost 11 years. I can't wait to hit the road. It is a much needed escape!

Woman Gets $100 Ticket for BUSHIT Bumpersticker

Denise Grier is a nurse at Emory University hospital in Georgia.

On March 10, she was driving home from dinner when a Dekalb County police officer pulled her over.

“At least initially, I was just surprised because I hadn’t done anything wrong,” she says.

“When he approached the car, he had his hand on his weapon, and I was in my nurse’s uniform with a stethoscope around my neck. He asked for my license, and then said, ‘Any idea why I stopped you.’

“I said no.

“ ‘You have a lewd decal on your car.’ ”

Grier says she immediately thought that one of her kids had put something nasty on her bumper as a joke.

“But then he mentioned the Bush sticker,” she says. That one says: “I’m tired of all the BUSHIT.” (This story was first reported by Joe Johnson of the Athens Banner-Herald.)

Grier says she told the officer it wasn’t lewd, and that it was clearly a political statement. When he insisted it was lewd, she said, “I’m not going to discuss this any further. Just give me the ticket.” Which he did.

Under “offense,” it says: “Lewd decals.”

The ticket is for $100.

Grier has no intention of paying it.

“I am so appalled at the officer’s attempt to squash my freedom of speech,” she told the Banner-Herald.

Elaborating to The Progressive, Grier says people are wrong to view this in a partisan way.

“It’s not just a Democrat/Republican issue,” she says. “Y’all need to get beyond that. It’s my right to speak, and yours.”

Gerry Weber, the legal director of the ACLU of Georgia, is representing Grier. “The indicators are that the officer didn’t like her views of President Bush and that was the motivating factor,” he says.

Weber says the ticketing was clearly illegal.

He says the Georgia Supreme Court struck down the “lewd bumpersticker” statute way back in 1991, in a case involving a defendant who had a “Shit Happens” bumpersticker.

This shouldn’t keep happening 15 years later, he says.

After the criminal case is over, Weber says he and Grier may file a civil rights claim.

The Dekalb County Police Department would not discuss the facts of the case.

“We don’t comment on other officers’ tickets,” says Officer Herschel Grangent, who handles media affairs. “That officer is making his decision on the street. And it’s going through legal channels now.”

By the way, this is not the first time someone in Grier’s family has gotten into trouble over a bumpersticker.

Last year, she says her 20-year-old son was pulled over in Athens, Georgia, for having a bumpersticker that said, “Bush sucks. Dick Cheney too.”

She says the police officer told her son, “If you do not remove the bumpersticker, I’m taking you to jail.”

So he removed it.

“He thought it was kind of funny,” she says, though she told him she would rather go to jail than take her bumpersticker off.

Grier has a court date of April 18.

I pulled a 13 hour day today on the job. Had to be there bright and early at 9 AM for a meeting (my day usually begins at 2) and rolled in the front door at 10 PM. At the meeting my boss handed me two tickets for a Grizzlies game tonight at the E Center. I took one of my deaf students. Hockey is a fascinating game. Chaotic and fast-paced...the thirst for blood is overwhelming at times, but highly entertaining. After several fist fights on the ice and a few bloodied mouths...the fans seemed satisfied, although we were down 1 point. I was not able to stay for the entirety of the game...not sure of the final score. I don't even care all that much. My student had a grand time and so did I. Being paid for such fine entertainment is not all that bad. The only part that truly sucked was driving to SLC during rush hour in a typhoon.

Just to help lighten the thought of my dreaded appointment today, here's a little story:

"I was due later that week for an appointment with the
gynecologist when early one morning I received a phone
call from his office. I had been rescheduled for 9:30 a.m.
that morning. I had just packed everyone off to school and
it was 8:45 already. The trip to his office usually took
about 35 minutes so I didn't have any time to spare.
As most women do, I'm sure, I like to take a little extra
effort over hygiene when making such visits, but this time
I wasn't going to be able to make the full effort. So I
rushed upstairs, threw off my dressing gown, wet the washcloth
and gave myself a wash in "that area" in front of the sink,
taking extra care to make sure I was presentable.
I threw the washcloth in the clothes basket, donned some
clothes, hopped in the car, and raced to my appointment.
I was in the waiting room only a few minutes when he
called me in. Knowing the procedure, as I'm sure you all do,
I hopped up on the table, looked over at the other side of
the room and pretended I was in Hawaii or some other place
a million miles away from there. I was a little surprised
when he said "my...we have taken a little extra
effort this morning, haven't we?" But I didn't respond.
The appointment was over. I heaved a sigh of relief, and went
home. The rest of the day went normally-some shopping,
cleaning, and the evening meal, etc.
At 8:30 that evening, my 14 year old daughter was getting ready
to go to a school dance when she called down from the bathroom,
"Mom,where's my washcloth?"
I called back for her to get another from the cabinet.
She called back,"No! I need the one that was here by the sink,
it had all my glitter and sparkles in it!!"

Talk about an uncomfortable position! The person I had to fire is one that I worked alongside with not too long ago, before I got the promotion.... There were actually supposed to be 4, but had 1 no show and another is coming back for a different shift...so I did 2. Today we are scheduled for 6. I have a Lead meeting first, at 9 AM. We are meeting at the Pantheon (YUMMY!) Interviews start at 11:30.

I really love my new position. I have so many more responsibilities. Not only do I oversee the entire staff and all the students, I also have to attend many meetings, on and off campus. Tomorrow morning I am leaving at 8:30 AM for an IEP in Orem. I am also responsible for the security. On my shift I must make 3 rounds in and out of the building, locking all internal and external doors. I have to check all of the state vehicles, making sure the doors are locked, windows are up and lights are off. I am also responsible for giving meds at dinner and bedtime. On top of that I am overseeing the adult living program. I am a mentor for these young adults that have already graduated and are independent, helping find work, social security, daily living skills just to name a few. Oh, and I am also on the interview panel. For the first time in my life, I will be sitting on the other side of the table, asking the questions not answering them. My day flies by so fast now...not even time to have my allotted break. Even though I have more to do, I am less stressed at work...I like that!

With the help of Sandy finding this vehicle on eBay, it is now officially my new ride. She's all cleaned up and legal. Passed emissions with flying colors (as stated by the mechanic who tested her). Her body is so straight...hardly any blemishes for her age. She's a '91 Mitsubishi Montero LS. Has a 3.0 liter V6. She is spacious and the interior is pretty nice. Auto Transmission, 4X4, HUGE sunroof that will actually open and close, auto windows that work, auto locks, cruise control....custom roof rack equipped with spotlights (just in case I feel the need to poach deer....ONLY KIDDING!!) I can't wait to strap on the canoe and load her up with camping gear!!

Woke up pretty early this morning. It had snowed a few inches sometime between going to bed and waking up. It was nice to see....the snow was coming down calmly but steady. I brewed some coffee and sat down to check my email. Within seconds it got so dark it seemed like nightfall and the wind was whipping quite strong. The snow was pelting against the front of my house, almost sounding like hail. The weather forcast only calls for a few inches in the valleys, but we are already there and it's still falling...

This past weekend I was over at my friends' house. In their fridge was one of these SPAM singles. It was one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. The back of the package is where the humor can be found. Unfortunately, I don't have an image of that. It gives you "crafty" ideas for the empty package after you have enjoyed this "crazy tasty" product.

My curiosity found me checking out the SPAM website.

I was quite surprised to find numerous SPAM products.

Mmmmm...this one sure looks inviting!
(only because of the Monty Python factor)

And for those of you who like a little spunk in your SPAM...

Not to mention the SPAM gift ideas. You can find everything from SPAM earrings to SPAM shoe laces. Maybe it's just me, but I am in awe over the hype on this stuff. I think I have tasted it once....It was a special kind of hunger.

I dunno...perhaps I'm being too critical about SPAM, but I think it is just WRONG!

....so I went a little overboard on the gun pics, but these are my friends and this is what we do when we get away in the woods. We are responsible adults and the children are under complete adult supervision...and they enjoy target shooting just as much as us, if not more!

Here are some things to consider when arguing the "Gun Control" factor:

Myth No. 1: Guns cause crime. A careful review of 18 academic studies shows that there is no relationship between the number of guns and the amount of crime in the United States. International evidence tells a similar story.

Myth No. 2: Gun control laws reduce crime. The nation already has 20,000 gun control laws, and the police arrest 220,000 people a year on weapons violations. Yet the violent crime rate is at an all-time high. Moreover, considering that fewer than 1 percent of all guns are involved in a crime and only 12 percent of all violent crimes involve a gun, gun control laws could have only a modest effect on crime - even if they worked exactly as intended, which they don't. For example, New Jersey, Hawaii and Washington, D.C., experienced sharp murder-rate increases after passing tough gun control laws. Canada, Taiwan and Jamaica reported similar experiences.

Myth No. 3: Guns are of little help in defending against criminals. In fact, guns are a big help. Each year, potential victims kill from 2,000 to 3,000 criminals and wound an additional 9,000 to 17,000. And mishaps are rare. Private citizens mistakenly kill innocent people only 30 times a year, compared with about 330 mistaken killings by police. Criminals succeed in taking a gun away from an armed victim less than 1 percent of the time.

Myth No. 4: Killing someone is the only reason to buy a handgun. The vast majority of gun owners cite protection from crime as one of the main reasons they own a gun. And for good reason. Americans use guns for self-protection about one million times a year. In 98 percent of the cases, they simply brandish the weapon or fire a warning shot.

Okay. I'm struggling with this one. I have taken on some uninvited tenants. The rent must be priced just right because it appears that they have moved in all their kin and then some. Don't get me wrong...they are cute. They seem to be getting quite comfortable in this abode. In fact, just last night, I was wandering around in search of my TV remote when I heard one moving about in some things I had lying on the floor (granted these things should have been put away a week and a half ago...but that's another story). When I moved the items, there it was...peering up at me with scared eyes...frozen with fear. The irony of it is Kira was not more than a foot away from the critter. Two things are wrong here. 1) Kira is unaffected by the critters and 2) the critters are now unaffected by Kira. Also, if I were to get a kitty to help with the situation, Kira would not hesitate to hunt down the feline.

I'm at my wits end. I have resorted to poison. Traps just are not cutting it. My house is small and I can hear every move they make in the night. I am starting to lose sleep.

After a pretty good snowfall this weekend, Sandy, Mark and I were compelled to build a snow-wench. Her name is (soon to be was due to Global Warming) Ginger. So I have this sister, my only sibling, who is married into the Mormon religion and recently moved to Utah. I went to visit over Thanksgiving weekend and we (my sis, 6 kids and me) were singing tunes that we all learned in our childhood. Her kids started to sing Miss Lulu Had a Steamboat and would start giggling whenever the swear words were insinuated. My sister then began to explain to me in these exact words, "I felt so guilty for teaching my kids that song that, in order to repent, I came up with my own version."

Here it is, sung in the manner of Miss Lulu Had a Steamboat:

Are there any dream specialists out there?

I dream all the time, but it is rare that I have lucid dreams or dreams that I can actually remember the next day. I had a strange dream the other day that I will talk about but the one that really freaked me out happened about a month and a half ago (or perhaps longer, I can't remember...time is arbitrary). To set up the scenario, I had to kick a roomie out of my house back in April due to some extremely inappropriate behaviors. He showed up in this particular dream. It was quite lengthy, but I will try and sum it up in as little words as possible.

There was a giant python lurking in my heating ducts. I could see it's enormous green glowing eyes when I peered into the vents. It was stalking the children in my home. As I was trying to warn the kids not to get too close to the vents and thinking of who I could call to rid of the beast, the ex-roomie comes in holding a rattlesnake in each hand. (In my dream these were his pets) When I saw him I told him to put the rattlesnakes away and help with the giant python. He got bit by the rattlesnakes and started to panic. As I was not sure whether to rush him to the hospital or continue with the python, I awoke.

Any ideas???? This one is still haunting me.

Now for my most recent dream...

I was at work and a fellow employee was giving me a tattoo on my back. The scene was of a green meadow with clouds in the sky. A unicorn and a leprechaun were also in the picture. For those of you who know me and where I work...ridiculous, right? WHAT DOES IT MEAN????

At least the lucid tornado dreams have stopped for the time being.
